How to Repot Plants: The Only 5-Step Solution You Need!

Updated: Sep 9, 2022

Repotting your houseplant in a new container with fresh potting soil when it outgrows its current container will promote new growth and a healthier plant. Continue reading to discover a repotting method that may be used by any enthusiast, green thumb or not.

Repotting houseplants is a type of routine care required for the continued health of the plant; this chore gives you the chance to upgrade a plant's container size, replace the potting soil, or both. The frequency of repotting depends on how rapidly the plant develops and how quickly the container or soil mixture deteriorates.

The roots of a plant cannot effectively absorb water and nutrients when it outgrows its existing container. A plant will cease growing as a result of this, and its leaves may even start to rot. You can swap out the planter for a bigger one to accommodate a growing plant.

It's crucial to replace the soil every year, even if a plant hasn't totally outgrown its pot, since as a plant develops, its roots drain the potting soil of nutrients.

How to Repot a Plant?

Repotting plants may be a simple procedure if you have the appropriate equipment and is essential to keeping healthy indoor plants. To prevent a mess inside your home, cover your table with old newspaper or repot outside. To repot your plant, adhere to these steps:

1. Get the new pot ready. Add a layer of fresh potting soil to the pot's bottom. Select the best soil for your plant, such as general potting soil for common houseplants or cactus potting soil for succulents.

2. Take the plant out of the previous pot. Avoid damaging too many roots when relocating the plant from its previous location. If the plant is in a plastic container, you can use a gentle squeeze to help the plant slip out. You may use a small trowel or shovel to carefully remove the dirt around the edges of the plant's huge terra-cotta container. When you're ready, gently remove the entire plant from its present pot by grasping the main stem around the base of the plant. It should be noted that as an alternative, you may cut the plastic of a root-bound plant in a plastic pot with a pair of scissors to reduce root damage, given that you don't cut the roots.

3. Decompress tense roots. Shake off some of the old dirt surrounding the roots, then place the plant on a table or other level surface. If you see that the roots are compressed, gently detangle as much of the root ball as you can. Use pruning shears to remove the spindly root system ends or any roots that are rotting or otherwise appear unhealthy if you have a rootbound plant with long, thin roots.

4. Place the plant in the new container. With one hand holding the plant, lower the plant's roots into the new pot until the tops of the roots are just below the lip. The new potting soil should be filled in and lightly packed down around the roots. Avoid packing the soil too firmly around the roots since doing so would deprive them of oxygen, which is necessary for plants to grow. Up until the soil is just above the plant's roots, keep on adding dirt. To help the soil settle even more, if feasible, lightly tap the bottom of the pot several times on the ground. If extra dirt is required, add it.

5. Water the plant. After placing your plant in its new pot, thoroughly water the soil until all of the water drains out of the bottom drainage holes. Moist but not excessively damp soil should make up the top layer. Consider adding extra potting mix and watering it again if you discover that the soil level has been significantly decreased by the addition of water. Keep the plant from getting too much water or letting it sit in a pool of it.
